Albino red top ice blue cichlid

Post by MakeSound on Wed Aug 28, 2013 4:31 pm

I purchased this fish a couple months ago from a pet store chain. I haven't been keeping cichlids for terribly long but it seems I've made a mistake. This albino has been getting bullied severely and I've rescued it twice from being killed and put it in quarantine to allow its fins to grow back, rearranged the tank, added more rocks and no matter what the situation hasn't improved.

I researched albino cichlids before I bought it and hadn't found anything saying not to mix them with other cichlids but perhaps I didn't look hard enough. I did not know about colour aggression at the time, so maybe that is the cause, or maybe its just the poor eyesight that doesn't allow it to get away fast enough.

It is back to good health and is energetic but I don't want to put it back in with the other fish when I am fairly certain that the exact same thing will happen.

If anyone can take it and give it somewhere peaceful to live or has any insight that could solve my problem, I'd really appreciate it! I don't wanna put this little thing through any more torment.

Have you asked the LFS if they would take him back for in-store credit?

No I haven't! Do you think they would even though it was a couple months ago? It was Pets Unlimited so I'm skeptical but maybe buying a fish there wasn't the best call in the first place.

Well I'd ask the fish room manager, after explaining the situation.

The problem with most African cichlids males is they need a lot of females of their kind to be happy.  Even then from my experience there is always one male who dominates the whole tank. They are a frustrating species of fish to keep.  Lol.  There is always a victim in a tank.

Yeah I definitely have an alpha male and things are tense but not fatally violent when the albino is out of the picture but ALL the fish in my tank seem to hate this albino and they go out of their way to antagonise it. All of them. At the same time. It's nutso. Last time I nursed it back to health, put it back in and watched it for several hours. It seemed to at least be avoiding the attacks well enough but the next morning all its fins had been chewed down to nubs again. Crafty little jerks.

Thanks for the advice though! I'll have to ask at the store.
